Understanding critical appraisal is vital for how we look after our patients. We need to be able to understand the evidence behind our treatments and diagnostic decisions, so we know if we should apply what we read to the patient in font of us.

This one day course is designed to help you do just that. Written by clinicians and not statisticians, we teach you what you need to know as a Doctor, paramedic, nurse, pharmacist, physio etc and NOT the exact details of how to do statistical tests if you are planning the statistics of a research paper.

The way we wish to teach critical appraisal, is to get you to understand concepts and not just rote-learn information.

The candidates are split into three groups and you will be taught in these small groups during the course.

The course is delivered into three sections:

Part 1 - An overview of critical appraisal
Same talk by three lectures

Part 2 - General review of studies
Three talks from different lectures that rotate around the room. (they deliver the same lecture three times).
The talks are on; What makes a good study?, All you need to know about statistics, Chance, effectiveness and error

Part 3 - Specific review of three types of key papers
Three talks from different lectures that rotate around the room. (They deliver the same lecture three times).
The talks are on; Diagnostic Trials, Randomised Controlled Trials, Meta-analysis
